Annual Conference 2011

On 29 November 2011, the European Security Round Table (ESRT) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Brussels invited to their Annual Conference on “Integrated Border Management and the External Dimensions of Border Security”.

The opening keynote was delivered by Minister Pieter De Crem, who underlined the increased relevance of border security during the last decade, thus the importance to strengthen European Border Guards and FRONTEX. This was followed by a keynote of Stefano Manservisi, Director General of DG Home Affairs.

With the four different panels, the conference aimed to involve all relevant stakeholders – the European External Action Service, DG Home Affairs and DG Enterprise, the European Council, National Representatives as well as the European Parliament, which Members showed a great interest in this topic.

Hence a comprehensive discussion, covering legislative, operational and technological questions and challenges, was achieved. A special focus of the conference was put on aspects of knowledge and technology transfer to Third Countries, with the aim of building up border security capacities.

A special highlight of the conference was the participation of Head of Mission S.E.M. Mohamed Farhat, Libyan Mission to the EU, who discussed with Michael Gahler MEP, Ana Gomes MEP and Franziska Branter MEP the case of Libya – in particular the cooperation of the EU with Third Countries and the challenges of disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) and a security sector reform (SSR).
