Time to adjust
An editorial by Christoph Raab, Director ESRT
The European Union is currently a place of insecurity. There is the battle for the future of the Euro, worries about national debts and the loss of trust within Member States in the common project. Further, the Arab spring emphasizes the importance of external policy and border security.
In spite of all this, the security and defence sector faces serious budget cuts. Further, CSDP is also facing new challenges through the Lisbon Treaty that strengthens the role of national parliaments. National reflexes seem to be the direct consequence of the insecurity that many European citizens feel.
The European Security Round Table (ESRT) as a neutral policy platform in Brussels does not only follow the current debates and political developments closely, but also adapts to them.
So we are working on extending our networks into national parliaments and will have more MPs present at our Round Tables. With this step, we hope to keep involving the key decision makers in security and defence.
