ANNUAL CONFERENCE
This year, the Annual Conference under the title "Integrated Approach - a more efficient EU foreign, security and defence policy" took place on 9 September. It was organised in cooperation with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung.
A parliamentary debate concerning what needs to be done in the upcoming years for improving the role of the Parliament in the ESDP area opened the fourth ESRT Annual Conference. The presence of MEPs coming from different political cultures offered to the participants a picture of the discussions that will characterize the parliamentary debates in this legislature.
Helga Maria Schmid opened the members-only afternoon session with a speech focussed on what the Council of the European Union has achieved in security and defence area during this 10 years of ESDP, moreover she defined some guidelines for future developments of the CFSP and ESDP.
The core of the conference, characterized by the two roundtables on Integrated Approach, have brought up some interesting points regarding the necessity of a civilian military approach for tackling the upcoming challenges. It clearly appeared that the Integrated Approach is an issue that is characterizing not only the debate within NATO but it is strongly present in the EU policy development. Furthermore, the discussion pointed out that we still have the necessity to solve several aspects related with procurement rules and equipment for the ESDP and CFSP operations.
